The 'Mom and I' contest was VIBA's (Vidya and
Shoba's) effort to bring to focus the essence of the
Mother-Daughter relationship in a celebration to mark International
Women's Day.
The
final event after the preliminary selection of mothers and
daughters was held at the Music Academy. The audience
consisted of the old and the young who had probably come to
see what the show was all about. The show started half an
hour later than the scheduled time and wound up at fifteen
minutes before midnight. The set was pleasingly done in a
pastel shade of green, resembling the sitting room of a house
complete with floor level seating, with cushions thrown around.
The
format for the show, however, was hackneyed, with nothing
new to offer. The Emcees of the evening were the Miss Asia
Pacific 2001, Maheswari and Neelkant whose lighter
vein comments and humourous asides fell flat most of the time.
The event flagged of with an audio-visual introduction of
the fourteen contestants. The mother and daughter were then
quizzed by the Comperes (Round 1) and were asked to exhibit
their talents. The teams chose mime, dance, music and sketching
in the Talent round (Round 2). A badly co-ordinated dance
ensemble belonging to the Hot Shoe Dance Company with
loud blaring music completely overshadowing their dance preceded
the introductory session. After the first two rounds, the
judges posed situational questions in the third round. Part
of the show, was a brilliant fusion dance performance by Srikanth,
a student of Dr. Padma Subramanyan, a fashion show
by professional models (who had wooden expressions) displaying
silk sarees and gold jewellery from Singapore Hanifaa's.
There was a display of a designer, XXL Tina Vincent
range of clothes for the bigger women. There was a solo
song rendering by crooner - Sunitha Sarathy (winner
of the Channel V singing contest 1999). The three-hour
entertainment session finally came to a close with the announcing
of the winners.
The
winning team was Sushma Midha and her daughter Akanksha
(A 12th standard student). Midha had sketched her daughter
while she was dancing. The second team was Nasreen Mehta
and daughter Nina (A 11th standard student). They
did a very interesting mime about the women in a metropolis.
The second runner-up team was Madhumati Achutan and
Archana. It was heartening to note that this team was
part of the winning teams, as Archana, despite being a victim
of mild cerebral palsy, displayed exceptional confidence.
The judges of the evening were leading figures from different
fields such as Films, Advertising, Media, Medicine and Software.
