Though it may look as yet another black, wrought iron frame, but for the Bastar tribal of Madhya Pradesh it is their living. Their hopes and dreams dwindle on the horse riders, a bird and a cattle hanging from the symmetrical iron bars.

The two dimensional figures that dangle from the multi-layered frame, symbolize the life and imagination of the tribal. This wall hanging is priced Rs.750/-.

At the annual sale held at Mrignayance, the Madya Pradesh Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation showroom, the tribal weaved utility and beauty made out of bamboo. The woof and Warf intertwines smoothly to create trays, jars, penholders and vases.

From the interiors of Madhya Pradesh, come the betel nuts, on with their fresh, green leaves but to be placed on the prominent nooks and crannies in your home. Raw betel nuts are cut open and made into slender animals (Rs. 130/-) and fragile cup and sauces (Rs.70/-) before the nut loses its moisture.

More visual expression of the dreams and hopes of tribal life are in the form of prints based on the etchings on the walls of houses. Mostly done by the women in the families, there is a print with a bunch of black snakes framed in an ochre background.

Ten prints come at a price of Rs.750/- while there are small, individual prints also available at the showroom. Madhya Pradesh Lok Kala Parishad has published all these works for the State Government.

The showroom has also collections of sarees from Madhya Pradesh that soothe the summer heat. The prices are on higher side with a silk sarees costing Rs. 2,790/-.

Address: Mrignayance, TNHB Complex, 180, Luz Church Road, Mylapore, 600 004.
