It was an evening of celebration for the 30 odd winners of brand
new Bajaj Boxer AT motorbikes and the grand winner of the
Maruti 800 at the Ball Room of the Taj Connemara.
Airtel,
one of Chennai's leading cellular service providers announced
and distributed the prizes to the winners of the SMS contest it
had conducted during November-December. The month long contest
proved to be very popular and combined the elements of fun while
testing knowledge about current affairs and had daily prizes of
Parker pens and gold coins. Nandini Ravi walked away
with the Grand prize - the Maruti 800.
Major General A S Jamwal, VSM, G.O.C., Andhra Pradesh, Tamil
Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Goa presided over the function and distributed
prizes to the winners. P H Rao, Managing Director,
Bharti Mobinet Limited said, "The response to the contest
was absolutely overwhelming and was a neatly woven exercise which
combined in it, the elements of fun, excitement as well as awareness
of the world around us. There will be many more contests and
promotional exercises in the days to come".
Airtel
distributed free SIM cards and handsets to students from Clarke
School and Voice of Deaf. P H Rao underlined Airtel's
commitment to the community and said that efforts like these were
a way of giving something back to the community. He also spoke
about Airtel's efforts to add more greenery to the city by providing
tree guards to saplings planted in and around Aitel's retail outlets.
Airtel has tied up with Exnora for this effort. M B Nirmal
of Exnora, while acknowledging the efforts of Airtel said
that Chennai would become clean and green faster if other corporates
were to follow Airtel's footsteps and adopt the areas around their
offices and showrooms.
Airtel
also announced the setting up of its 101st base station
and also the fact that they are the first operator in Chennai to
have more than 100 base stations. Airtel was also the first
to launch vernacular SMS service in Chennai. It has already
launched Magic in Chennai, which is claimed to be India's
largest selling ready cellular card.
Bharti Mobinet is a subsidiary of Bharti Televentures, a
company promoted by Bharti Telecom, and is India's largest
private sector provider of telecommunications services with an aggregate
of around 12,75,000 customers. Bharti Televentures currently
provides cellular service in six of the twenty-two licence areas
in India. It announced its intention to cover nine additional
circles by the middle of 2003.
