India's
youngest ever Chess Grandmaster, P Harikrishna and International
Master Aarthie (former Under-18 World Champion), both
sponsored by Wipro Corporation, were in Chennai to play with
top Under-12 players of Tamil Nadu recently. Wipro had arranged
for the simultaneous match, where six of the top Under-12 chess
players from Tamil Nadu matched their wits against the recently
crowned Grandmaster Hari and the International Woman's Master Aarthie.
It was a day full of chess, chess and more chess. The event started
at 8.30 in the morning with the Under-12 players from Tamil Nadu
joining Hari and Aarthie to play the simultaneous match. The games
lasted for nearly three hours with each player having 90 minutes
on the clock. Later, the youngsters said that they had picked up
quite a few tips and moves from the game.
The
end of the game was not the end to the exciting day for attendees.
Renowned International Grandmaster Yevgeny Vlandimirov,
who has been in the country for the past one month as Wipro's guest
coaching Hari, spoke to the young players about the game. He pointed
out some of the mistakes made by the young players about the game.
He also offered advice for improving their games. Speaking to the
players, their parents and coaches, he underlined the importance
of young players getting the opportunity to play more games. He
also acknowledged the efforts and support that corporates like Wipro
bring to the game.
At the end of the day, the Under-12 players went home happy and
satisfied that they had learnt a few points and it was gratifying
to see that Hari and Aarthie have already attempted to give something
back to the game.
Hari
and Aarthie, while speaking to the media said that they were grateful
for all the support from Wipro. Wipro's association with Hari and
Aarthie is now almost two years old. Wipro provided a computer notebook
to Hari as early as 2000, to help him practice better. Local girl,
Aarthie Ramaswami has been supported by Wipro since January 2000,
after she won the World Under 18 Girls Championships in Spain. She
has since then attained two Woman Grandmaster norms and is on her
quest for attaining the third.
Sandhya Ranjit, Manager, Corporate Communication, Wipro
Corporation said that, Wipro was committed to organising more events
like this not only in Chennai, but all across India and playing
a prominent role in identifying and sponsoring chess talent in the
country. She also said that, Wipro was trying to organise an International
tournament in the near future in India.
