It was an enjoyable evening for the 30 odd children at the Children's
Ward of Cancer Hospital at Adyar thanks to the Inner
Wheel Club of Meenambakkam and Hathway Internet Services.
An entertainment programme was held specially for these children
as part of christmas celebrations in one of the rooms of the Children's
ward, which was done up for the occasion with festoons and banners.
The children were pretty excited by the five foot Christmas tree
sponsored by Hathway.
The
programme started around 5 pm in the evening and the rain and cold
weather could not dampen the spirit of the enthusiastic children.
It was a touching sight to see the boys from the Saint Louis
Institute for the Deaf and Blind sing carols even as the other
children joined in with them. It was soon time for games and
the children had real fun with 'Passing the Parcel' proving to be
a great hit. And then it was time for Santa to come around
with gifts. The gifts were sponsored by the Inner Wheel Club
members.
"It is just a small gesture to spread a little cheer among these
kids who are suffering from cancer", said Ivy Nagarajan,
President of Inner Wheel Club of Meenambakkam. The Inner Wheel
Club of Meenambakkam belongs to Inner Wheel District 323 (Chennai).
She said that the club had adopted the Children's ward of the Cancer
Hospital and the club members regularly visit the hospital to spend
time with the children.
Inner
Wheel Club members are the wives, widows, mothers and daughters
of Rotarians. It is the women's wing of the Rotary Club.
Friendship projects such as these are among the many activities
that the Inner Wheel Club organises to serve the weak and the downtrodden.
Says Ivy about the activities of her club, "Apart from projects
like these we have worked with the physically disabled, mentally
retarded, spastics, juveniles, sex workers and their children, HIV
positive women and the old aged". The Inner Wheel Club
was also instrumental in starting the 'Yellow Ribbon Club' to create
awareness and organise testing, screening and vaccination for Hepatitis-B.
