RASA
RASA
(Ramana Sunritya Aalaya) is the only non-profit organisation
in the city that applies the methodology of Creative Movement
Education to children with physical and mental disabilities.
The brainchild of Dr. Ambika Kameshwar, Director RASA, this
comprehensive methodology has been accepted by the medical specialists
dealing with disabilities.
Established in 1989, RASA now extends services to over 500 children
having varied disabilities. In its ten years of rehabilitating children
with special needs, RASA has proved that the application of Creative
Movement Education (CME), results in better self-expression
and communication skills in the children. It, in turn, helps them
become more physically able and mentally alert, giving them a fresh
sense of confidence.
CME
uses the theatre arts like dance, music, drama, and story telling,
arts, crafts and movement games as specific learning tools. Physiotherapy,
speech therapy, special education and psychotherapy are used as
inputs. It is supplemented with daily classes focussing on the holistic
development of children with special needs. Programmes are designed
and executed in accordance with the specific requirements of children
attending the school. RASA has also extended its services to various
special schools in Chennai.
The
organisation also offers a Post-Graduate Diploma in CME. This
course provides inputs in CME, anatomy, physiology, psychology,
rehabilitation, child development, disabilities and application
of movement as therapy. A panel of experts conducts the classes.
A one-week orientation programme for volunteers (about the nature
of the organisation's work) is also conducted.
The RASA Centre for Art is a separate wing, where regular
classes in classical dance and Indian theatre are held.
All donations paid to the organisation are exempt of tax under
the section 80 (G) of the Income Tax Act.
