CAN-STOP
CAN-STOP (Cancer Support Therapy to Overcome Pain) strives
to help people learn more about dealing with cancer and cope with
its related problems.
Started
in 1998 by Dr.Vijaya Bharathi Rangarajan, as a tribute to
Dr. S. Rangarajan who established Sundaram Medical Foundation,
CAN STOP is now the centre for counselling (information, advice,
consolation, listening) for cancer-affected patients, their families
and friends. It also organises group discussions, with various therapy
sessions for patients and their families.
The organisation is working on a continuous basis with 60 children
(afected by cancer) at the Department of Haematology, Institute
of Child Health and Children's Hospital, Egmore, 120
women with cervical cancer from the Government Hospital of Women
and Children, and with cancer patients at the Government
General Hospital, Chennai.
The
volunteers of CAN STOP make daily visits to the Institute of Child
Health and Children's Hospital, Egmore. The children are exposed
to various kinds of therapies. In educational therapy, the children
are provided with educational material such as blocks, puzzles and
books to help them spend their time productively during their stay
at hospital. Trained volunteers are there to listen and console
the families of these children.
The organisation has a separate blood bank, which obtains blood
for children and women during surgery. A corpus fund has been created
to provide necessary drugs on a regular basis to all the needy cancer-affected
children from low socio-economic backgrounds. Tender coconut water
is provided to 120 women patients, once a week, at the Women's Hospital,
Egmore.
Milky
Way- a nutrition project was launched to provide 60 cancer-affected
children, milk mixed with Complan, plus biscuits, thrice
a week. The organisation also attempts fulfilling the wishes of
critically ill cancer children in the age group of 0-16 years.
Children with a good prognosis, but from low socio-economic backgrounds,
are given essential drugs for a period of one year, through individual
sponsors. Camps are organised, especially for the economically weaker
section, regarding awareness in oral cancer, breast cancer and cervical
cancer. Plans are on the anvil for a mobile unit that can be used
to reach people living outside the city.
The organisation accepts donations and these are exempt from Income
Tax under the 80 G of the Income Tax Act.
