KANYAKUMARI

It is the only place where, on a full moon day, you can see the sun set and the moon rise simultaneously. At the confluence of the three seas (the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea) Kanyakumari marks the southernmost tip of India.

Vivekananda RockA little off shore is the Vivekananda Rock (named in remembrance of the philosopher Swamy Vivekananda who meditated at this spot). On this rock is built a multi-styled edifice as a memorial to Swamy Vivekananda. From the second rock, a colossal statue of the Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar rises majestically upward. In town, the Kumari Amman temple, dedicated to the virgin goddess Kanyakumari, is an important shrine. The Gandhi Memorial (built on the spot where Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were kept for public view, before immersion in the three seas) also draws many visitors.

822 km from Chennai.
Nearest airport - Thiruvananthapuram
Well connected by rail and road.
