RAMESWARAM
At
the south-eastern tip of the Indian peninsula is the Hindu pilgrim's
final stop. Hindu mythology tells us that Lord Rama sanctified
Rameswaram through his worshipping Siva, after the war against
Ravana. Adorned with splendid sculpted columns, Rameswaram
has the longest temple corridor in the country. Also at Rameswaram
are the Kothandaramaswamy temple and the beautiful coral
reefs off the Kurusadai islands. Apart from its appeal to
the tourist, Rameswaram is also a significant marine centre in South
India.

POOMPUHAR
Located around 40 kms from Chidambaram, this ancient town
was a major port during the Chola period. Only a small village
remained after the city was submerged in the sea.
Also called Cholapattinam and Kaveripattinam, this
port city was known to Ptolemy and Pliny. Poompuhar
is also the setting for the renowned Tamil epic Silapathikaram.
Poompuhar's Government Art Gallery (opened in 1973), depicts scenes
from this epic.
Places of interest include Elanji Mandram, Pavai Mandram
and the Nedungal Mandram.
Over 2000 years old, this city was built with remarkable planning.
Ships from this port left to Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Sri Lanka,
Egypt, Indonesia, Cambodia and other places.
A favourite spot for history buffs, Poompuhar is known for sea
bathing in its calm waters.
