The
Madras Chamber of Commerce was founded on September 29th, 1836.
The MCCI is the oldest in the country, second only to the Bombay
Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The first committee of the Chamber
comprised 18 members with John Alves Arbuthnot as Chairman. It became
The Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) in 1966.
From the start, the MCCI has been closely linked to the social,
economic and political life and times of the State. Today the MCCI
attempts to proactively influence public policy and practice on
issues which impact economy, trade, commerce and industry. They
also see themselves as representing social processes such as education,
health, infrastructure and environment.
Their services include:
Liaisoning and maintaining good rapport with Government departments,
Institutions, Diplomatic Missions in India and abroad.
Information dissemination on trade enquiries for import/export
of Indian products, changes in legislation, rules, regulations
and notification relevant to industry, issued by Government and
other institutions.
Organising seminars, workshops, conferences, training programmes
to constantly update members on the latest developments in Trade
and Commerce.
Arbitration of professional disputes between member companies
and other companies.
The MCCI has a well equipped library with books, periodicals,
publications and Trade directories from India and other countries.
Conscious of the fact that its position is in the present and life
is in the future, the MCCI strives to become an informal but powerful
influence as the 'parliament of commerce' and enable trade
and industry to cope with the demands of the global market.
