Processing Zones, or EPZs, are given special concessions
which separate them from the Domestic Tariff Area (DTA).
The exporting firms within the EPZs jurisdiction have an advantage
in the international markets since they are able to produce at lower
costs. Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ), is one of the
seven EPZs set up by the Indian Government. Located in Chennai.
MEPZ is headed by the Development Commissioner
MEPZ offers exporters developed plots and built-up factory space
for low-cost production. Several incentives like concessional and
duty free import from the Central and State Government, provide
the opportunity to produce at reasonable costs.
MEPZ is located on the National Highway from Chennai to Tiruchi,
about 6 kms from the airport and 24 kms from the Harbour. Any pollution-free
industry, which is not power-intensive or water-intensive, can be
set up in the Zone. MEPZ is a multi-product zone. Products range
from textiles and leather to electronics and engineering, perfumes
and toys; with textiles and software contributing to more than 50%
of the export value.
